'Tis the season
I currently work at a grocery store that deals with organic foods or foods that pass their test of being a healthier alternative. In the produce department, fruits and vegetables are pretty much available year round with a few exceptions. Fresh berries in December, apples in March, etc. I remember gathering strawberries in summer and picking apples in fall with my dad when I was young. We live in Cleveland and we were shoveling snow in December not picking berries. My wife, Gayle, and I plan on using what is in season for our meals this year. I am sure it will not be a perfect system but we are going to make a go of it.
There are many ways we will secure our fresh produce. There are an abundance of farmers markets around Cleveland, local high schools with growing programs, and we can always depend on the West Side Market. I do not think that we will have any problem getting fresh tomatoes. Usually friends, family, and co-workers plant more than they know what to do with and are giving their tomatoes away. Herbs are something we will be growing around the yard. Fresh herbs are something I can’t do without. I told my daughter about some of the canned vegetables that are out there. I wish I could put into words the look of absolute disgust when I told her about canned asparagus. I apologize if anyone reading is a champion of canned asparagus, but it was so funny to see that shocked look that asparagus could be served from a can. .
Below is a link to some of the salads and dressings we make at our house. It isn’t a perfect representation of what is in season now, but it is progress.
